Meet The Newly Promoted Serie A Teams For The 2022/23 Season

The 2021/22 Italian Serie A season ended with AC Milan winning the title for the first time in 11 years. Cagliari, Genoa and Venezia got relegated while Lecce, Cremonese and Monza are the newly promoted Serie A teams for the 2022/23 season.

The 2022/23 Serie A season will be the 121st season of the Italian top flight and the 13th season since it was rebranded as Lega Serie A.

Like in other leagues, the season will be interrupted by the FIFA World Cup in mid-season and will resume after the World Cup.

Lecce

Lecce gained promotion to the Serie A after emerging as champions of Serie B. It returns to the top flight after a 2-year absence.

Fully named as Unione Sportiva Lecce, it is based in Lecce, Apulia, Italy. Lecce was initially founded in 1908 and got dissolved before it was re-founded in 1927 and again in 1934.

The club’s nickname is I Giallorossi (The Yellow and Reds). It plays its home games at the 31,533 capacity Stadio Via del mare. The President is Saverio Sticchi while the manager is Marco Baroni.

Lecce has spent a large part of their time in recent years bouncing between Serie B and Serie A.

The team made its Serie A debut in the 1985/86 season. Its highest position in the 1st division was a 9th-place finish achieved in 1988/89. The 1988/89 squad contains a certain Antonio Conte.

The club’s main rivalry is with the other most successful football team from Apulia, S.S.C. Bari. Lecce’s matches against Bari is called derby di Puglia.

Lecce’s best players are: Massimo Coda, Gabriel Strefezza, Francesco Di Mariano, Fabio Lucioni and Guillermo Giacomazzi.

Cremonese

Cremonese secured automatic promotion to the Serie A after finishing as runners-up in Serie B. The club returns to the top flight after a 26-year absence.

Fully named Unione Sportiva Cremonese, it is based in Cremona, Lombardy, Italy. The club was founded in 1903 (119 years ago). It is nicknamed I Grigiorossi (The Gray and Reds) or Le Tigri (The Tigers).

Cremonese plays its home matches at Stadio Giovanni Zini which has a 20,641 capacity. It is owned by Giovanni Arvedi while the President is Paolo Rossi.

Fabio Pecchia was the manager during the 2021/22 season but resigned from his post despite achieving promotion.

Cremonese got relegated to the Serie C in 2006 and only returned to the Serie B after 11 years (2017). Five years later (2022), it secured promotion to the Serie A after a 26-year absence from the top flight.

Cremonese’s fiercest rivals are Brescia and Mantova.

The club’s best players are: Emanuele Valeri, Christian Buonaiuto, Daniel Ciofani, Luca Zanimacchia, Gianluca Gaetano and Nicolo Fagioli.

Monza

Monza won the 2021/22 Serie A play-offs to secure promotion to the top flight for the first time in its 110-year history.

Fully named Associazione Calcio Monza, it is based in Monza, Lombardy, Italy.

The club was founded in 1912 as Monza F.B.C. In 2004, It was renamed to A.C. Monza Brianza 1912 and again in 2015, it was renamed to S.S.D. Monza 1912.

It is nicknamed I Biancorossi (The White and Reds) and hosts its home games at the Stadio Brianteo which has a capacity of 18,568 (9,999 operational).

Monza is owned by former Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi — who was also the former owner of AC Milan. The President is Paolo Berlusconi (younger brother of the owner), the Chairman is Andriano Galliani (former CEO of AC Milan) while the manager is Giovanni Stroppa.

Monza returned to the Serie B in 2020 after a 19-year absence and secured promotion to the Italian 1st division in 2022.

In the 2021/22 season, Monza lost to Perugia and missed out on direct promotion to Serie A on the final matchday. But having finished in 4th place in Serie B, Monza qualified for the play-offs where they defeated Brescia in the semi-finals and booked a final place against Pisa.

Monza won the first leg at home 2–1, while Pisa won the second leg 3–2 to send the tie to extra-time. Two goals in extra-time ensured Monza won the encounter 4–3 (6–4 on aggregate), to earn promotion to the 2022/23 Serie A for the first time in history.

Before their promotion, no Italian team had played more Serie B seasons without playing in the Serie A than Monza (40).

Its fiercest rivals are Como, Pro Sesto and Pisa.

Monza’s best players are: Mattia Valoti, Carlos Augusto, Dany Mota, Christian Gytkjaer and Luca Mazzitelli.
